While we were at Fort Smallwood Park on Saturday, I also worked with my assistant some on her photography. I had her use my camera to pose and photograph myself. Included here is some of her work and my feedback. To be clear, overall, I was happy with her work, and I also got her permission to share this critique on here.
The first picture all marked up with red covers pretty much everything I will be talking to her about. These are also very easily missed issues that on their own are not so bad but together they really start to add up.
1) The hood – hoods are fine, just be sure they are where you want them in your shot. If they are not or if they are and are just in an unflattering position, then adjust them.
2) Lint - A bit of lint along the back of my jacket here. Personally, I find this more distracting than most other issues but that might just be me. It also depends on the size of the lint but regardless keeping a roller on hand and remembering you have one on hand can easily avoid this issue.
3) Pockets – I’ve always said people look awesome and I stand by this, so long as they are trying to be people and not Kangaroos. Here you can see my pocket not only has my mask, but it also has my gloves. It doesn’t look very flattering and is easily solved (just put my stuff in my car and my mask somewhere else).
As far as these issues go, the lint is the easiest solved during processing with the tools have I in the processing software. The pocket issue is solved by cropping that part out of the photo but that may not always be an option. The hood would take a lot longer to fix, so much that I am not going to bother editing it out, which once again shows a few seconds looking for stuff like that is a lot easier than trying to fix it after the fact.
That stated, I am happy with her work and it’s a good baseline to teach here a bit more about photography.
