Patience is key when working with animals. All they can do is give you the best interpretation of what they think you want and even then, that depends on if they want to do that. But if you lose your temper, you will lose the entire photo session. So, stay patient.
Also, I often recommend giving the dog something to do to add to your shot. When doing that consider how your dog will interact with what you are giving them. They will eat a treat, but they might retrieve a tug rope. Or if you give them a bone, they might retrieve it and then chew on it. It is a way to direct the chaos for your photo session and get you more in the direction of what you are going for.
Finally, if you are trying to get a range of shots, start with activities and end with resting shots. It will just work out easier that way.
